In 2010 at the Farnborough Airshow, Irkut
showed a glorious but scaled-down model of their commercial jet the MC-21
. At the 2012 Farnborough Airshow they were proudly displaying a partial, full size mock-up and it completely hits the winning combination of form and function. Kindly guided through the mock-up by Andrey DOBRITSA
, Civil Airplanes Sales Support, Senior Manager, he showed me through the roomy and functional airplane I would be happy to fly in (notice the food cart is narrow enough not to bump into passengers) and I believe any pilot would be pleased to fly those controls in the cockpit.
The first flight is slated for the middle of 2015 and first delivery is scheduled for 2017.
A little bit about the MC-21: A narrow body aircraft, Irkut has designed the interior to have a wide body feel. Carrying 150-181-212 passengers, this short to mid-range aircraft is reported to be one third lighter than its 737 and A320 conterparts due to the composite materials being used in the airframe. Irkut is offering two engines: the first one is the Pratt & Whitney Pure Power PW1000G and the second option is the Russian PD-14 designed by JSC Aviadvigatel.
