To celebrate the closure of the 2014 Farnborough International Airshow at the Farnborough Airport in Hampshire, England, ISTAT gladly welcomed 32 children along with their families from the Shooting Star CHASE organization to an exclusive experience at the ISTAT Chalet on Sunday, 20 July. As ISTAT prepared for their arrival, crews from GES/SDD and the Farnborough Airshow Team moved into high gear building special ramps for our guests and even moving air conditioners to accommodate the ramp. Behind-the-scenes arrangements were made to bring in some very special guests to add even more excitement for the children and their families.

The day began with the police escort from the main gate to chalet. Upon arrival, each special guest received a gift bag containing items donated by many of our members. The kids were blooming with excitement as they put on their aviation caps, lanyards, aircraft pins, toys and more. Many of the children put together model planes donated by one of our manufacturers as they anxiously awaited the start of the airshow.

The anticipation watching the air displays was further enhanced by visits from American and British military air crew who were attentive to the children and very patiently answered all their questions. In addition, the entire Royal Air Force Red Arrows Team stopped by the chalet for a meet-and-greet session with the families. It was truly a memorable event for the more than 120 children, family and volunteers who were treated to first-class exposure of the airshow.

Geraldine Sheedy of Shooting Star CHASE is grateful to have had this oppor- tunity for the children and their families sharing, “We can’t thank ISTAT and Farnborough enough for giving our families the opportunity to experience the airshow in such special surroundings—I think the chalet had the best views on the whole airfield.”

ISTAT Director Phil Seymour was on hand with his family to enjoy the show and greet our special guests. Seymour noted it was an exceptional event, and he is truly grateful to everyone for bringing this experience to fruition. The smiles on the faces of the children made it more than worthwhile. ISTAT hopes to continue to host more experiences for Shooting Star CHASE at future airshows.
